Twenty-four CWA activist met on Monday, April 30 at the Colorado state capitol to lobby for HB18-1435, Protection of Colorado Call Center Jobs. (Click on Picture for full size.)
As constituents, the group was represented by 26 State Representatives and Senators. Many spoke personally with their own representatives (and got cell phone numbers). Legislators expressed interest in and/or support for the legislation. Pueblo Representative Judy Reyher called Dustin Sullivan the next day and said she wanted to come to the call center. Senator Leroy Garcia said he would help out next year in the Senate.
After lunch, they had a brief presentation from AFL-CIO Legislative Director, Bre Andrews, on how a bill becomes a law — from bill introduction through the readings on the chamber floor, committee hearings, floor votes, moving through the other chamber and being signed by the governor.
In the afternoon, CWA members Dustin Sullivan, Mimi Mahdi, Greg Caren and Riley Emmons testified for the bill in the House Finance Committee hearing. Representative Daneya Esgar, the bill’s sponsor, gave an introduction to the bill by talking about the need to protect the jobs in her district. Here you can listen to the audio from the hearing by clicking on the appropriate link for HB18-1435. We look forward to working with Representative Esgar and others to move the bill further in 2019.

Here is a good editorial from the Dallas Morning News about why AT&T needs to stop outsourcing our call center jobs.
It was a great day, but it’s just the beginning. Please get more involved in CWA’s legislative and political action work — both in the workplace and beyond!
